{"id":1139,"date":"2016-08-06T13:12:40","date_gmt":"2016-08-06T19:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/vim\/?p=1139"},"modified":"2016-08-06T13:36:32","modified_gmt":"2016-08-06T19:36:32","slug":"cognitive-behavioral-therapy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/vim.nrvana.com\/demo\/cognitive-behavioral-therapy\/","title":{"rendered":"Cognitive Behavioral Therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy\">From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Cognitive behavioral therapy<\/b> (<b>CBT<\/b>) is a <a title=\"Psychosocial\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psychosocial\">psychosocial intervention<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-Handbook6_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-Handbook6-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-CBT_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-CBT-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> that is the most widely used <a title=\"Evidence-based practice\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Evidence-based_practice\">evidence-based practice<\/a> for treating <a title=\"Mental disorder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mental_disorder\">mental disorders<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ABCs_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-ABCs-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> Guided by empirical research, CBT focuses on the development of personal <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Coping strategies\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coping_strategies\">coping strategies<\/a> that target solving current problems and changing unhelpful patterns in <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Cognitions\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitions\">cognitions<\/a> (e.g., thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes), behaviors, and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Emotional regulation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emotional_regulation\">emotional regulation<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-CBT_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-CBT-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Benjamin_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-Benjamin-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> It was originally designed to treat <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Clinical depression\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clinical_depression\">depression<\/a>, and is now used for a number of mental health conditions.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The CBT model is based on a combination of the basic principles from <a title=\"Behaviorism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Behaviorism\">behavioral<\/a> and <a title=\"Cognitive psychology\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_psychology\">cognitive psychology<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-CBT_2-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-CBT-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> It is different from historical approaches to psychotherapy, such as the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Psychoanalytic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psychoanalytic\">psychoanalytic<\/a> approach where the therapist looks for the unconscious meaning behind behaviors and then formulates a diagnosis. Instead, CBT is &#8220;problem-focused&#8221; and &#8220;action-oriented&#8221;, meaning it is used to treat specific problems related to a diagnosed mental disorder and the therapist&#8217;s role is to assist the client in finding and practicing effective strategies to address the identified goals and decrease symptoms of the disorder.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Schacter_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-Schacter-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup> CBT is based on the belief that <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Cognitive distortions\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_distortions\">thought distortions<\/a> and maladaptive behaviors play a role in the development and maintenance of psychological disorders,<sup id=\"cite_ref-ABCs_3-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-ABCs-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> and that symptoms and associated distress can be reduced by teaching new information-processing skills and coping mechanisms.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Handbook6_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-Handbook6-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Schacter_7-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psychotropic_medication\">psychotropic medications<\/a>, review studies have found CBT-alone to be as effective for treating less severe forms of depression and <a title=\"Anxiety disorder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anxiety_disorder\">anxiety<\/a>, <a title=\"Posttraumatic stress disorder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Posttraumatic_stress_disorder\">posttraumatic stress disorder<\/a> (PTSD), <a title=\"Tic disorder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tic_disorder\">tics<\/a>, <a title=\"Substance use disorder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Substance_use_disorder\">substance abuse<\/a> (with the exception of <a title=\"Opioid use disorder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Opioid_use_disorder\">opioid use disorder<\/a>), <a title=\"Eating disorder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eating_disorder\">eating disorders<\/a>, and <a title=\"Borderline personality disorder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Borderline_personality_disorder\">borderline personality disorder<\/a>, and it is often recommended in combination with medications for treating other conditions, such as severe<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Obsessive compulsive disorder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Obsessive_compulsive_disorder\">obsessive compulsive disorder<\/a> (OCD) and major depression, opioid addiction, <a title=\"Bipolar disorder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bipolar_disorder\">bipolar<\/a>, and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Psychotic disorder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psychotic_disorder\">psychotic disorders<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Handbook6_1-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-Handbook6-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> In addition, CBT is recommended as the first line of treatment for the majority of psychological disorders in children and adolescents, including aggression and <a title=\"Conduct disorder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conduct_disorder\">conduct disorder<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Handbook6_1-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-Handbook6-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Benjamin_4-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-Benjamin-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> Researchers have found that other <i><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Bona fide\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bona_fide\">bona fide<\/a><\/i> therapeutic interventions were equally as effective for treating certain conditions in adults,<sup id=\"cite_ref-Baardseth_9-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-Baardseth-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Shedler_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-Shedler-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup> but CBT was found to be superior in treating most disorders.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Handbook6_1-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-Handbook6-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> Along with <a title=\"Interpersonal psychotherapy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interpersonal_psychotherapy\">interpersonal psychotherapy<\/a> (IPT), CBT is recommended in treatment guidelines as a psychosocial treatment of choice,<sup id=\"cite_ref-Handbook6_1-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-Handbook6-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy#cite_note-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup> and CBT and IPT are the only psychosocial interventions that psychiatry
