{"id":1141,"date":"2016-08-06T13:13:53","date_gmt":"2016-08-06T19:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/vim\/?p=1141"},"modified":"2016-08-06T13:38:17","modified_gmt":"2016-08-06T19:38:17","slug":"mindfulness-cognitive-therapy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/vim.nrvana.com\/demo\/mindfulness-cognitive-therapy\/","title":{"rendered":"Mindfulness Cognitive Therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mindfulness-based_cognitive_therapy\">From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy<\/b> (<b>MBCT<\/b>) is a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Psychological therapy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psychological_therapy\">psychological therapy<\/a> designed to aid in preventing the <a title=\"Relapse\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Relapse\">relapse<\/a> of <a title=\"Depression (mood)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Depression_(mood)\">depression<\/a>, specifically in individuals with <a title=\"Major depressive disorder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_depressive_disorder\">major depressive disorder<\/a> (MDD).<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mindfulness-based_cognitive_therapy#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> Its intent to address MDD specifically distinguishes MBCT from other mindfulness-based therapies such as mindfulness-based stress reduction which is applicable to a broad range of disorders, and mindfulness-based relapse prevention which is used to treat addiction.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mindfulness-based_cognitive_therapy#cite_note-:0-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>MBCT uses traditional <a title=\"Cognitive behavioral therapy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy\">cognitive behavioral therapy<\/a> (CBT) methods and adds in newer psychological strategies such as <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Mindfulness (psychology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mindfulness_(psychology)\">mindfulness<\/a> and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Mindfulness meditation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mindfulness_meditation\">mindfulness meditation<\/a>. Cognitive methods can include educating the participant about depression.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mindfulness-based_cognitive_therapy#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> Mindfulness and mindfulness meditation, focus on becoming aware of all incoming thoughts and feelings and accepting them, but not attaching or reacting to them.<sup id=\"cite_ref-sciencedirect_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mindfulness-based_cognitive_therapy#cite_note-sciencedirect-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> This process is known as &#8220;Decentering&#8221; and aids in disengaging from self-criticism, rumination, and dysphoric mood that can arise when reacting to negative thinking patterns.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mindfulness-based_cognitive_therapy#cite_note-:0-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Like CBT, MBCT functions on the theory that when individuals who have historically had depression become distressed, they return to automatic cognitive processes that can trigger a depressive episode.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Felder_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mindfulness-based_cognitive_therapy#cite_note-Felder-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> The goal of MBCT is to interrupt these automatic processes and teach the participants to focus less on reacting to incoming stimuli, and instead accepting and observing them without judgment.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Felder_5-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mindfulness-based_cognitive_therapy#cite_note-Felder-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> This mindfulness practice allows the participant to notice when automatic processes are occurring and to alter their reaction to be more of a reflection. It is theorized that this aspect of MBCT is responsible for the observed clinical outcomes.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_2-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mindfulness-based_cognitive_therapy#cite_note-:0-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Beyond its use in reducing depressive acuity, research additionally supports the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation upon reducing cravings for substances that people are addicted to. Addiction is known to involve the weakening of the <a title=\"Prefrontal cortex\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prefrontal_cortex\">prefrontal cortex<\/a> that ordinarily allows for delaying of immediate gratification for longer term benefits by the limbic and paralimbic brain regions.
