{"id":1146,"date":"2016-08-06T13:26:46","date_gmt":"2016-08-06T19:26:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/vim\/?p=1146"},"modified":"2016-08-06T13:30:32","modified_gmt":"2016-08-06T19:30:32","slug":"1146-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/vim.nrvana.com\/demo\/1146-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Acupuncture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture\">From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Berman2010_2-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Berman2010-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> It is commonly used for pain relief,<sup id=\"cite_ref-Ernst_2011_10-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Ernst_2011-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-NCCAM2010_11-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-NCCAM2010-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup> though it is also used to treat a wide range of conditions.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Liu-2013_3-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Liu-2013-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> The majority of people who seek out acupuncture do so for musculoskeletal problems, including <a title=\"Low back pain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Low_back_pain\">low back pain<\/a>, shoulder stiffness, and knee pain.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Ishizaki2010_34-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Ishizaki2010-34\">[33]<\/a><\/sup> Acupuncture is rarely used alone but rather as an adjunct to other treatment modalities.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Hutchinson2012_12-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Hutchinson2012-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup> Published guidelines recommend the use of acupuncture for the management of non-specific low back pain, among other treatments.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Hutchinson2012_12-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Hutchinson2012-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup> For example, the <a title=\"American Society of Anesthesiologists\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Society_of_Anesthesiologists\">American Society of Anesthesiologists<\/a> states it may be considered in the treatment for nonspecific, noninflammatory low back pain only in conjunction with conventional therapy.<sup id=\"cite_ref-35\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-35\">[34]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific <a title=\"Acupuncture point\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture_point\">acupuncture points<\/a> along the skin of the body using thin needles.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Adams_2011_4-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Adams_2011-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> It can be associated with the application of heat, pressure, or <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Laser light\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laser_light\">laser light<\/a> to these points.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Adams_2011_4-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Adams_2011-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> Classically, acupuncture is individualized and based on philosophy and intuition, and not on scientific research.<sup id=\"cite_ref-36\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-36\">[35]<\/a><\/sup> In modern acupuncture, a consultation is followed by taking the pulse on both arms and inspecting the tongue. for the treatment of children (<i>sh\u014dnishin<\/i> or <i>sh\u014dnihari<\/i>).<sup id=\"cite_ref-38\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-38\">[37]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-39\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-39\">[38]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Clinical practice varies depending on the country.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Ernst2006_9-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Ernst2006-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Dummies_40-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Dummies-40\">[39]<\/a><\/sup> A comparison of the average number of patients treated per hour found significant differences between China (10) and the United States (1.2).<sup id=\"cite_ref-41\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-41\">[40]<\/a><\/sup> Acupuncturists generally practice acupuncture as an overall system of care, which includes using traditional diagnostic techniques, acupuncture needling, and other adjunctive treatments.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Sherman_42-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Sherman-42\">[41]<\/a><\/sup> <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Chinese herbs\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chinese_herbs\">Chinese herbs<\/a> are also often used.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Sherman_42-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Sherman-42\">[41]<\/a><\/sup> There is a diverse range of acupuncture approaches, involving different philosophies.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Pe.C3.B1as2010_8-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Pe.C3.B1as2010-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup>Although various different techniques of acupuncture practice have emerged, the method used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) seems to be the most widely adopted in the US.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Berman2010_2-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Berman2010-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> Traditional acupuncture involves needle insertion, <a title=\"Moxibustion\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moxibustion\">moxibustion<\/a>, and <a title=\"Cupping therapy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cupping_therapy\">cupping therapy<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Xu_S_17-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Xu_S-17\">[17]<\/a><\/sup> Traditional acupuncture may be accompanied by various ancillary procedures, such as <a title=\"Palpation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palpation\">palpation<\/a> of the <a title=\"Radial artery\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radial_artery\">radial artery<\/a> and other parts of the body and examining the tongue.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Berman2010_2-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Berman2010-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> Traditional acupuncture involves the belief that a &#8220;life force&#8221; (<i><a title=\"Qi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Qi\">qi<\/a><\/i>) circulates within the body in lines called meridians.<sup id=\"cite_ref-NHS_43-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-NHS-43\">[42]<\/a><\/sup> The main methods practiced in the UK are TCM and Western medical acupuncture.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Wheway2012_44-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Wheway2012-44\">[43]<\/a><\/sup> The term Western medical acupuncture is used to indicate an adaptation of TCM-based acupuncture which focuses less on TCM.<sup id=\"cite_ref-NHS_43-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-NHS-43\">[42]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-WhiteCummings2008_45-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-WhiteCummings2008-45\">[44]<\/a><\/sup> The Western medical acupuncture approach involves using acupuncture after a medical diagnosis.<sup id=\"cite_ref-NHS_43-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-NHS-43\">[42]<\/a><\/sup> Limited research has compared the contrasting acupuncture systems used in various countries for determining different acupuncture points and thus there is no defined standard for acupuncture points.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Millers2014_46-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acupuncture#cite_note-Millers2014-46\">[45]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In traditional acupuncture, the acupuncturist decides which points to treat by observing and questioning the patient to make a diagnosis according to the tradition used. In TCM, the four diagnostic methods are: inspection, auscultation and olfaction, inquiring, and palpation.
